How to play Spades

Bid how many tricks your partnership will take, then meet the combined contract while managing overtricks and possible nil bids.

Start with a plan

These notes cover the controls, rules, and decisions in this browser version.

Choose live matchmaking or a bot table, then bid the number of tricks you expect to take. A bid of zero declares Nil.
Follow the led suit whenever possible. If void, play another suit or a spade; the highest trump wins unless a higher led-suit card applies.
Spades cannot lead until broken unless the player holds only spades. Work with your partner to meet the combined contract.
Made contracts score by bid with overtricks recorded as bags; missed contracts and failed Nil bids lose points.

Count reliable top cards first, then discount kings and queens that are vulnerable because their suits are short or unsupported.
Watch the partnership total during play; once the contract is safe, avoid unnecessary bags unless blocking the opponents matters more.
When covering a partner’s Nil, keep control cards for the suits in which the Nil bidder appears vulnerable.
Track the high spades already played so late trump tricks are judged from remaining cards instead of opening-hand assumptions.
