How to play Spider Solitaire

Build columns downward by rank. Only same-suit descending runs move together. Complete king-to-ace runs to clear them.

How to play Spider Solitaire

These notes cover the controls, rules, and decisions in this browser version.

Play a round

  1. Choose one, two, or four suits, then build tableau cards downward by rank regardless of suit.
  2. Only a perfectly descending same-suit run can move as a group; mixed-suit stacks must be separated first.
  3. Move cards to uncover hidden tableau cards and open columns, which can accept any card or movable run.
  4. Deal a new row only when every column contains at least one card. Complete king-to-ace same-suit runs are removed automatically.

Strategy for this version

  • Prefer same-suit builds even when a mixed build is legal, because same-suit runs preserve mobility.
  • Use empty columns to sort tangled stacks, but avoid filling the last empty column without a clear way to reopen it.
  • Expose hidden cards before dealing another row; every deal adds one new blocker to every column.
  • Before moving a long run, check what it reveals and where the run can move next so a good sequence does not become stranded.
